Ali and Shiva’s Story...

Shiva, an adorable female Bichon Frise, was a mistreated, suffering animal when she was adopted by Ali Bordar in 2009.  Care and kindness restored her and, with no other relatives in Canada, Shiva became Ali’s family and constant companion.

On Thursday, March 11,2010, while on their customary walk, disaster struck.  Frightened by an aggressive dog, Shiva darted into traffic and was struck by a car.

Ali is on government assistance and with no access or money for transportation carried her 10 km. to the Toronto Humane Society seeking help for her injuries. Unable to assist they directed him to the Veterinarian Emergency Clinic and he carried her a further 15km. arriving at their door 3 hours after the accident.

Suspecting a broken pelvis the estimated expenses for her initial treatment and diagnostic care ranged from $1500 to $3000. Previously, Dr. Barbara Bryer, head of Emergency Medicine would have had no option but to euthanize an animal in Shiva’s condition when the owner was unable to cover the cost of treatment. However, with CAWF in a position to help, the necessary information was quickly referred to CAWF’s Board members and the decision to assist was unanimous.

Diagnosis identified, not a broken pelvis, but rather a significant internal injury.  Shiva’s spleen was sitting between her rib cage and her skin. Surgery was performed the following day and her recovery required 3 additional days stay at the VEC, during which time Ali called and visited her.

Thanks to the Companion Animal Wellness Foundation Shiva is now at home with Ali. With the help of the Foundation she has a new lease on life and both Shiva and her companion are ecstatic.
